Widening the Access to Movie-Watching Experience, Cinema XXI Opens the First Cinema in Bontang

  • Cinema XXI opens Citimall Bontang XXI as part of its commitment to open around 80 new screens by the end of 2023.

  • The opening of Citimall Bontang XXI was followed by the movie screening of “Petualangan Sherina 2” – a movie that was primarily filmed in the Kalimantan area.

BONTANG, October 11, 2023 – The largest cinema chain in Indonesia, PT Nusantara Sejahtera Raya Tbk (Cinema XXI), is committed to providing the widest possible access for the public to enjoy the moviegoing experience by opening cinemas in potential areas. As a concrete manifestation of this commitment, Cinema XXI opened the first cinema in Bontang, East Kalimantan, Citimall Bontang XXI. Mayor of Bontang Basri Rase, Director of Cinema XXI Dody Suhartono, Head of Government Relations Cinema XXI Suprayitno, and Head of Operating Property NWP Property, the parent company managing Citimall Bontang, Teges Prita Soraya were present to officiate the opening of Citimall Bontang XXI (11/10).

"After making very thorough preparations, the first cinema in the city of Bontang, Citimall Bontang XXI, is here to provide the best moviegoing experience, without compromise, and at affordable prices for the people of Bontang and its surroundings. The presence of Citimall Bontang XXI is in line with Cinema XXI's commitment to open around 80 new screens by the end of 2023 and around 140 new screens by the end of 2024. We hope that Citimall Bontang XXI will not only be a place to watch movies, but also a second home for people of Bontang and its surroundings to spend quality time with family and friends," explained Suprayitno.

People of Bontang usually had to travel up to 120 km to Samarinda, East Kalimantan to enjoy their favorite films on the big screen. It is hoped that the presence of Citimall Bontang XXI will become the favorite entertainment alternative for Bontang residents and its surroundings. Per Euromonitor International survey in early 2023, it is stated that 62% of Indonesians consider moviegoing activity as their main social activity, such as spending quality time with family or friends.

Basri Rase said that the grand opening of Citimall Bontang XXI not only marked the development of the film industry in the city of Bontang but was also a way for the government to celebrate the success and growth of its beloved city. “On October 12 tomorrow, we will celebrate the 24th birthday of the city of Bontang. Citimall Bontang XXI is one of our steps towards a better future, where entertainment and culture will continue to be important parts of the greater development of Bontang."

The opening of new cinemas in various locations, including Citimall Bontang XXI, was born out of the enthusiasm of the Indonesian people to return to watching movies in cinemas after the COVID-19 pandemic. This enthusiasm is in line with the revival of the domestic film industry which is also presenting more quality movies by the nation's creative powerhouses.

Development of the domestic film industry should be supported by the growth of cinema screens in Indonesia, the potential of which is still very large. Based on research from Euromonitor International in early 2023, Indonesia only has 7.6 screens per million population, while developed countries have an average of 84.3 screens per million (2022 estimate) and Southeast Asia has 30.2 screens per million population.

"The presence of XXI reaching out to various regions will directly impact the development of the creative industry in Indonesia. For Bontang City itself, this is a reflection of the rapid economic development in this city so investment in the entertainment sector from outside Bontang City may continue to arrive. This may as well help increase the variety of entertainment tenants at Citimall Bontang," explained Teges.

After officially opening Citimall Bontang XXI, Bontang Mayor Basri Rase along with Bontang city government officials and guests watched the musical film "Petualangan Sherina 2". The film is produced by Miles Films and Base Entertainment and was chosen because not only it is made by national creative producers but also centers around orangutan conservatory activities in Kalimantan. "Kalimantan is the main location of the movie. Therefore, it is wonderful for more people in Kalimantan can watch this movie. With the presence of Citimal Bontang XXI, people of Bontang, East Kalimantan, can now enjoy the movie," said Mira Lesmana, producer of the musical film "Petualangan Sherina 2".

People of Bontang can also enjoy other quality movies, not only “Petualangan Sherina 2”, from both domestic and international that are screened at Citimall Bontang XXI. Information regarding movie titles and screening schedules can be seen on the website www.cineplex21.com and m.tix platform. Through m.tix, Bontang people can ensure the availability and purchase the desired movie tickets. They can also have more freedom in selecting schedules and seat positions, avoid queuing to buy tickets at the counter, and order food and beverages at XXI Café. "Citimall Bontang XXI customers can also take advantage of various promotions from Cinema XXI partners so they can enjoy the best moviegoing experience at affordable prices," concluded Suprayitno.
